Toward a Pure Gold Light is the sound of a trio's collaboration, a pooling of three lifetimes of musical influences, the gestation period of a pandemic, and finally the release of playing a year of live shows.

The sound was captured by engineer Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Bob Mould, Dodos) at Oakland's Tiny Telephone studio. The title, taken from one of Alex's lyrics, perhaps alludes to some kind of optimistic quest, and serves as a fitting analog to the musical journey of this record.
